SoCal Fest 2012, Saturday, Odessa Canyon

Monday, April 30th, 2012

SoCal Fest is officially kicked off and it’s time to start getting dirty.  For Saturday I was leading the moderate run up Odessa Canyon, typically this is a fairly easy trail with only a couple of tricky spots for open/open rigs or inexperienced drivers; today it was a bit more difficult than usual.

Heading to SoCal Fest 2012 in Calico

Friday, April 27th, 2012

Time for SoCal Fest 2012. Due to issues with the USFS and the company that operates the campgrounds were were unable to have our event in Big Bear like we usually do. As an homage to the SoCal Chapter’s first official event SoCal Fest 2012 will be in Calico, just East of Barstow, CA. Calico is a great area that has something for everybody to do.

Unfortunately I was unable to take the big Jeep to the event so I’ve got the little black 1996 XJ with me. I’ll lead either an easy or moderate trail tomorrow, we’ll see how things work out. As event coordinator I’ll make sure everybody has a good time at the event.

All events must start somewhere, and when you leave your home in the South Bay of Los Angeles at 5:00 PM they generally start with traffic:

I’ll try to remember to update this at the end of the day tomorrow with some photos from the event.

1977 Cimatti City Bike

Monday, June 20th, 2011

I’ve had this old Italian moped sitting in my shed or garage for about the past fifteen years, I decided a good Fathers’ day project was to tear it down and poke at it with aims to get it running well again, not exactly a restoration as I have no plans to paint it at this time.  I’ll update this as I do stuff but don’t expect quick progress on this little pet project.

Repairing the KLR Tank Shrouds

Monday, June 20th, 2011

When I bought the KLR back in July Josh included the old tank shrouds with the bike.  The only problem is they had been torn off a few times and were in pretty bad shape.  This weekend I finally got around to mounting them back to the bike.

Mojave Road 2011

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Mojave Road, one hundred thirty-odd miles of dirt that bisects the Mojave National Preserve and offers a spectacular visit to the beauty of our desert and history.  This is a trail that we almost lost due to the Mojave Preserve and Wilderness areas.  I ran this trail again this past weekend with LOST Jeeps SoCal.

Quick Ride – Holy Jim’s Canyon

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Here is a quick shot of some dirt under the KLR’s wheels.  I had some time to kill while working on some servers in my Orange County Data Center so I decided to have lunch under a tree.

Of course the bike did just fine on that simple dirt road although the Dunlop 607 rear sure did like to wash out on anything slippery.  I’m going to have to change that before I hit any real dirt.

Giving the truck an Optima

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

After some recent drama with a bad battery and no time to deal with the warrantee I ended up with a spare Optima Red Top. After a bit of thought I decided to toss it in the truck.

Santiago Peak, a short drive.

I had a few hours to kill while some servers filled up tapes in Orange County so I decided to hit Santiago Peak, here are some  highlights:
