Almost ready to head up the mountain. I’ve got the trailer loaded with my gear and the Jeep just about ready, all I need to do now is get a cheap voltage regulator to control the alternator (my Mobi-Arc isn’t being very nice right now) and the Jeep’s ready. Then toss some clothes in a bag, fill my water bladders with clean, clear water, and get some food and drinks on the way out.

For this years SoCal Fest I brought my buddy Brett along and my M416 for the maintenance, as well as a quite overbuilt Jeep…

On Friday we did our traditional trail maintenance, unfortunately we did not get the kind of attendance we normally get and had a rather small group of Brett, Bill and Helen, Tim and Ethan, Brendon, and myself. We went though 2N04 and cleaned it up, as you can see in the above photo the M416 really saved our ass this time around because there was a lot of debris to be picked up.

After the maintenance Tim and I went over to John Bull trail because our Forest Service guy, Greg, was over there doing a large project with the Waywegoes and we wanted to ask him a few questions. We arrived there, talked to Greg, then saw just how good a job they did making the Eastern rock garden difficult, a good enough job in fact that Tim and I had to give it a try right then and there.

After that we went back to camp and ate, drank, and all that jazz.

The next morning we all met up at the Big Bear Discovery center to divy up who was going on what trail and all that jazz. I chose to lead Holcomb Creek to John Bull (in that direction as the Waywegoes were still finishing up on John Bull). There was a bit of an issue there as I chose to go into the trail system via a few fire roads, while it shaved a lot of distance off and would have normally shaved a lot of time off the trip I failed to take into account how slowly a large group travels on a fire road, the long windy pavement would have been a better decision in hindsight. I ended up taking the alternate way into Holcomb Creek, Lower Larga Flat, because my father was driving a TJ with a welded Dana 35 in it and I would not allow him to anything difficult.

Since I had already done these trails I made Brett do the driving, he enjoyed it.

After the trail running we went back to camp just in time for the dinner to crank up. After the dinner we had the raffle and all were happy.

On Sunday we stuck around Serrano bullshitting and all that. We slowly packed up and then started the drive home.

I was talking to a buddy of mine on the phone about a month ago and just happened to say something about the ¼ ton military trailers I liked. Well he knew of one sitting in a field and said he’d ask the old lady who owned it one day… The day came, she said I could have it, so I high tailed it out to the desert and Josh and I picked it up (along with the Cushman he got for himself). I even tried to give her some money for it but she refused! Best of all the trailer was in almost perfect shape, no hacked up tailgate! The only problem was a broken landing leg and a modified lunette, both of which will be fairly easy fixes.
