New Tires for The Chief

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

I realized last weekend when I was in the desert that my tires were looking pretty bad. I had plenty of tread left (by my standards) but there was a bit too much cracking in one of them and a bad sidewall gash in the other so it was time to upgrade.

I ended up keeping them at 30″ x 9.50″ x 15″ but going with BF Goodrich All Terrains.  The BFG’s came in cheaper than another set of Bridgestones would have and while I had no issues with the Bridgestones the BFG All Terrain is a well known and proven tire.

PS, after chalking and parking lot cruising these tires told me that they want to run at 32psi on the stock XJ.

CB Antenna

Saturday, September 23rd, 2006

In preparation for Moab I needed to mount my CB antenna someplace and did not want to use a magnetic mount.  This was easily solved with some 1″ x 1/8″ steel, a hammer, a vice, and a drill.

Oil!

Thursday, July 6th, 2006

Wow, this Chief is kinda strange.  With it’s fairly new engine that has no leaks you fill the oil up and it just stays full, how weird is that?

New Tires

Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

My old tires were looking pretty bad so I was in the market for new tires, I also bought some fancy Jeep Grizzly wheels from Mike Rollins (he sure has a lot of neat stuff for sale!) that had to be installed.  I ran into a deal for 30″ x 9.50″ Bridgestone AT Revos for dirt cheap so I snatched them up and had them mounted, it looks much better now!

Replacing the rear axle…again

Sunday, June 4th, 2006

While at SoCal Fest Robert Prater offered me his old Chrysler 8.25 axle and I jumped on it.  It had the proper gears (3.55:1), was the stronger of the two 8.25′s offered (29 spline), was centered correctly, and had shock mounts!  So I went down to his place in Lake Forest, bought the axle, and then installed it.  While I was in there I also replaced the rear leaf springs with some good take offs (since I was not interested in lifting it) and removed my temporary fix for sagging springs, the 1″ lift blocks.  Once I was done I had a Jeep that rode well again!

Hit the Deck

Monday, May 29th, 2006

Well I got tired of killing carpet so I cut myself a 3/4″ plywood deck for when I’m hauling axles and other bulky / dirty objects.  An added bonus is that it is much easier to slide axles in and out of the vehicle.  I also cut holes to access my tie down hooks as I’m pretty paranoid about securing loads.

2nd Annual SoCal Fest

Friday, May 5th, 2006

Well it was time for the next NAXJA Southern California chapter SoCal Fest in Big Bear.  As usual we started out with trail maintenance on Friday and then played on Saturday and Sunday.  This time around I brought the Chief as the red Jeep was in pretty sad shape and the Chief was new to me; I also found the prospect of wheeling a stocker again to be nice.

Axle Replacement

Sunday, April 30th, 2006

I had to do something about the 35 in the Chief and got a hold of a set of 3.55:1 axles, that will give me a bit of an edge on gearing and get rid of the bad axle…
