I realized last weekend when I was in the desert that my tires were looking pretty bad. I had plenty of tread left (by my standards) but there was a bit too much cracking in one of them and a bad sidewall gash in the other so it was time to upgrade.

I ended up keeping them at 30″ x 9.50″ x 15″ but going with BF Goodrich All Terrains. The BFG’s came in cheaper than another set of Bridgestones would have and while I had no issues with the Bridgestones the BFG All Terrain is a well known and proven tire.

PS, after chalking and parking lot cruising these tires told me that they want to run at 32psi on the stock XJ.

For this year’s Fall Fling I drove the Chief. I haven’t gotten around to installing Johnny’s engine yet nor have I finished the build but the Chief is ready to go! I started out by driving to Yucca Valley to meet up with my father and his friend Jerry (each driving their own vehicle) and waited for them to get ready. When they were done we took off and started the drive.

We stopped at the rest area South of Beaver, Utah to get some sleep and continued the drive the next morning. Since we had a lot of time we diverted a bit and took a portion of the frontage road along I-70, our quest was to find the tunnels, we found them.

We arrived in Moab on Sunday and relaxed the rest of the evening. Monday’s task was getting our trailer set up (we had a trailer instead of a cabin – long story) and going to town to get supplies. On Tuesday the rains started… The first part of the day was busy with rainproofing our trailer, we set up a blue tarp awning and had to build a duct tape dam around the air conditioning unit. Little did we know this would be the start of a pattern…

After we finished waterproofing our stuff the rain stopped (of course) and we went for a drive. We started out by visiting Potato Salad Hill so my father could take another look at it then we just started driving. We ended up taking Geyser Pass Road up to the pass, it was kinda cool to visit some snow in October…

On Wednesday we went along with Captain Ron and Montana Boy to play a bit with the buggy, I even drove it for a bit and trust me, it is every bit as much fun as it looks like!

After that we high tailed it back to Slickrock to set up for the BBQ. Then we ate BBQ and had a few beers. Of course we had to set up another emergency awning due to the rain and it was quite entertaining having six drunks try to tie a tarp up.

On Thursday I lead Hell’s Revenge and made Derek be my OOC (Optional Obstacle Coordinator). It was a bit of a soggy drive there but by some sort of luck every time we got to the optional obstacles the skies cleared up and we were able to play. The only one we didn’t hit was Mickey’s Hot Tub because it had about four feet of water in it.

One the way down, while going through the squeeze, one of the guys had a problem. The mechanical fan bracket spun a bearing and dissolved so his Jeep was down for the count. We ended up double strapping him and getting him to the end of the trail. After that I sent everybody else back with Derek and waited with him for a truck and trailer to arrive. Ryan came by with his very yellow Dodge, loaded James up, and took him back. After that we went to Moab brewery and talked shit.

On Friday I stayed at Slickrock because the dinner was coming up (I had to arrive early to set up the raffle and such) and I did not want to be out on a trail and possibly get stuck due to the rain. We had our dinner and raffle then went back to Slickrock to have a few drinks.

We left Moab Saturday for the long drive home. My father’s truck acted up a bit during the drive but not too terribly. As usual we slept at the rest stop South of Beaver and then continued back to California.

While at SoCal Fest Robert Prater offered me his old Chrysler 8.25 axle and I jumped on it. It had the proper gears (3.55:1), was the stronger of the two 8.25′s offered (29 spline), was centered correctly, and had shock mounts! So I went down to his place in Lake Forest, bought the axle, and then installed it. While I was in there I also replaced the rear leaf springs with some good take offs (since I was not interested in lifting it) and removed my temporary fix for sagging springs, the 1″ lift blocks. Once I was done I had a Jeep that rode well again!

Well it was time for the next NAXJA Southern California chapter SoCal Fest in Big Bear. As usual we started out with trail maintenance on Friday and then played on Saturday and Sunday. This time around I brought the Chief as the red Jeep was in pretty sad shape and the Chief was new to me; I also found the prospect of wheeling a stocker again to be nice.

The drive out was rather fun. When we flipped the spring perches on the MJ Dana 35 at Ron’s we did not have time to work on shocks so I ended up driving it up to Big Bear late Thursday night with no rear shocks, that was annoying. On Friday we did the trail maintenance on NAXJA’s adopted trail, 2N04. The maintenance was about as easy as it always is, the only thing special was we had to move one boulder off the road.

Since there was nobody who wanted to have a stocker run I ended up just randomly driving around the easier stuff in Big Bear with my father, the only goal I had was to meet up with the John Bull group as they were on the Eastern rock garden, which we did.

On Saturday night we had the dinner and raffle and I believe everybody had a good time. Aaron handled the food and did a great job, although vowed to never do it again, I don’t blame him.

After the dinner and raffle I wondered around the campsite being a belligerent drunk. On Sunday I slowly packed up and left Big Bear in the mid-afternoon so I could get home early.

I had to do something about the 35 in the Chief and got a hold of a set of 3.55:1 axles, that will give me a bit of an edge on gearing and get rid of the bad axle…

Out with the Old…

I started out by removing the old Dana 30 so I could swap the new one in.

After that I replaced the ball joints & bushings in the “new” axle and put it in.

Click it.

I then removed the rear axle and installed the “new” 35. It was then that I realized that either Ron or I made a mistake with the tape measure when flipping the spring perches. While the perches were the correct distance apart they were offset to the right about two inches, so now the rear end was shifted to the left. Oops.
